Emission and Fuel Savings Technology Options For Engines

All engines – diesel, gasoline, propane, and natural gas – produce exhaust containing carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and oxides of nitrogen. These emissions result when complete combustion does not take place in the cylinder. Diesel engines also produce particulate matter. As more focus is placed on health and environmental issues, governmental agencies throughout the world are enacting tougher emissions laws.
Because so many diesel engines are used in trucks, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and their counterparts in Europe and Japan first focused on setting emissions regulations for the on-road market.
Reduced emissions don’t have to come at the expense of engine performance. Engineers utilize a combination of innovative engine design and new technology to improve fuel economy and performance while meeting emissions regulations.
Available technologies for reducing emissions include:

• Charge air cooling
• In-cylinder solutions including nanotechnology treatments
• Exhaust gas recirculation
• Adding Turbochargers
• Fuel injection systems
• Full authority electronic controls
• After treatments including advanced fuel treatments
• Stacking technologies and treatments
